Habitat is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating sub-standard housing. Since 1987, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County has built over 200 affordable, quality built homes for families in our community. We have served over 500 families with housing solutions programs.

The Habitat program allows families to purchase a stable and decent home with an affordable mortgage. Proceeds from monthly payments help build more homes in St. Joseph County.

Qualified families invest time in what we call Sweat Equity – by taking classes to prepare them for homeownership, working on Habitat build sites, and eventually, helping to build their very own home.

Right now, we are recruiting for 3 New Energy Homes in South Bend and two renovated homes in South Bend.

The New Energy homes are two-story homes built on a slap foundation with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The first floor is fully accessible with a wheelchair ramp, zero-step entry, a bedroom, a bathroom, kitchen, living room, and washer and dryer. On the second floor there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. In addition, there are sheds for additional storage. Monthly mortgage payments projected around $450 and utility payments $0-50!

Located across the street from the Near Northwest Neighborhood Office and the Local Cup coffee shop, feel welcomed in your new neighborhood filled with Habitat homeowners and other families looking out for each other.

Our renovated homes can be even more affordable each month and vary in size, style, number of bedrooms, etc.

For more information on these homes, click here.

Please consider Habitat’s application guidelines on this page. Any applicant who does not meet these criteria will not be approved.

If you believe you meet all of these criteria, and are interested in purchasing one of our seven South Bend homes, please register to attend an Application Meeting to take the first step and learn more.

1 in 4 Americans spend more than 50% of their pre-tax income on housing. That leaves precious little for basic necessities like food, transportation, and medical care. The Fair Market Value for a 2 bedroom apartment in St. Joseph County is $810/month. With a Habitat home, the average cost is $550/month, you can own it (instead of renting), and gain equity every month. Homeownership also means that you alone are responsible for maintaining your home. Habitat Homeownership builds strength, stability, and self-reliance.
